The Right Processor for Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve

When it comes to the processor, the codec is the main factor in determining which one is the right choice. If you work extensively with H.264 or H.265 (HEVC), you’ll benefit greatly from Intel Quick Sync: An Intel Core Ultra 7 270K Plus accelerates the import and export of these codecs via a dedicated hardware unit within the chip, independent of the rest of the processing power. If, on the other hand, you work with RAW footage or complex effects that can’t be accelerated via Quick Sync, raw computing power matters more—and that’s where AMD Ryzen 9 models and AMD Threadripper take the lead. Independent benchmarks from Puget Systems also show that Threadripper PRO isn’t worth it for Premiere Pro; the additional cores, higher RAM capacity, and multi-GPU support don’t provide any performance advantage over a standard Threadripper, but they cost significantly more.

The Right Graphics Card for Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve

Modern editing software is offloading more and more tasks to the graphics card: effects, color correction, and final rendering benefit massively from GPU acceleration. With an NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics card, you can take advantage of the dedicated video encoders, which reduce the load on your system during export and calculate effects in real time on the timeline. How much graphics memory you need depends on the resolution of your projects: A few GB are sufficient for 1080p; for 4K, we recommend at least 8 GB of VRAM; for 6K, at least 12 GB; and for 8K and higher, 16 GB or more. An RTX Professional is generally not necessary for this; GeForce cards like the RTX 5070 or RTX 5080 offer better value for money when it comes to video editing.

How much RAM does video editing require?

Video editing loads enormous amounts of data into RAM to enable a lag-free preview. 64 GB is the maximum for our video-editing PCs and is more than sufficient for the vast majority of 4K projects. If you regularly work with 6K or 8K footage or have multiple programs open simultaneously—such as After Effects—and need more than 64 GB, our workstation lineup offers configurations with significantly higher RAM capacities.

Storage for Your Video Editing PC

The speed of your hard drives determines how quickly your footage loads. We recommend a three-tiered setup: a fast SSD or NVMe for the operating system and software, a separate drive for project files and assets, and a dedicated NVMe SSD as a scratch drive for media caching. Only at high bitrates of around 2,000 Mbit/s or higher does NVMe make a noticeable difference for the raw footage itself; at lower bitrates, a good SATA SSD is sufficient.
