![]() | Silent PC Systems – Quiet Computers for Sensitive Ears
PC systems from the MIFCOM Silent PC series are specially optimized for minimal noise, without compromising performance. High-quality silent PC components, carefully selected for each configuration, are only half the battle. Equally important are the well-thought-out design of the entire cooling system and how individual components interact under real-world conditions. Otherwise, a supposedly well-built silent PC can quickly overheat or turn out to be anything but “silent” after assembly. For this reason, silent PC systems require even more extensive design, testing, and optimization.
This is where our many years of experience in building silent PCs really shine. Silent PCs have long been among our company’s most popular products and for good reason. At MIFCOM, every build is meticulously crafted with great attention to detail, truly living up to the name “Silent PC.” |
Building a Silent PC – Here’s What Matters:
![]() | Silent PC: Quiet CPU Cooler
One of the most important components of a silent PC is the CPU cooler and its fan. It must not only be adequately sized for the CPU being used but also offer enough headroom so that, ideally, it doesn’t have to run at full speed even under full load. Tower coolers with heat pipes have recently proven to be particularly efficient for installation in a silent PC. When combined with a 120 or 140 mm PWM fan, these coolers offer the best possible cooling performance at low noise levels. Some of them are even suitable for passive cooling, though this requires careful consideration of factors such as airflow within the case and processor performance. Currently, CPU coolers from be quiet!, Scythe, Thermalright, or Noctua are very popular for installation in silent PCs. |
![]() | Silent PC: Quiet Case Fans
Just as important as the CPU fan are the case fans in a silent PC. They are responsible for supplying the entire system with fresh air. To do this, they must provide good airflow while remaining very quiet, a combination found in only a few models. But even the quietest fans are often not good enough for an ultra-silent configuration. This can be remedied by appropriate throttling or a properly configured control profile in the BIOS. This allows a fan to run at a lower speed and be even quieter. However, cooling performance also decreases, so you must carefully test the lower limit to which you can throttle the built-in case fans. The rule of thumb is: the more fans you have, the slower they can spin while still providing quiet cooling.
Currently, the best case fans for a silent PC are likely the models from the be quiet! Silent Wings 4 series. Even at 1500 RPM and over 80 m³/h airflow, these fans are remarkably quiet at just under 20 dB(A). When throttled to around 1000 RPM, they are practically inaudible at just 10–12 dB(A), the airflow noise in the silent PC can only be detected at close range. Almost all silent fans are already equipped with a 4-pin PWM connector, which enables significantly better fan control via the motherboard. |
![]() | Silent PC: Quiet Power Supply
Even if the CPU and case fans have been replaced with suitable silent models, there is often at least one fan left in the PC that can quickly ruin all efforts to create a silent PC. We’re talking about the fan in the power supply. Especially in budget power supplies, inferior fans with a short lifespan are often installed. When building a silent PC, it is therefore essential to ensure that a high-quality power supply with a temperature-controlled fan of at least 120 mm is used.
Almost all power supplies from be quiet! currently meet the expectations of silent PC enthusiasts. MIFCOM offers the particularly quiet Pure Power 12, Straight Power 12, and Dark Power Pro P13 series. Corsair also offers particularly quiet models with semi-passive fan control in its RMx, HXi, and AXi series. |
![]() | Silent PC: Hard Drive Soundproofing
Even if all other sources of noise have been eliminated from the silent PC, the hard drive can still throw a wrench in the works. Its motor, spinning at a minimum of 5,400 revolutions per minute, generates audible vibrations in addition to the actual motor noise, which are transmitted to the case and can be further amplified as a result. In an unfortunate scenario, if the so-called resonance frequency of a case is hit, things can get really unpleasant. The typical clacking of the read/write heads adds to this.
Good cases are therefore equipped by design with special decoupled mounts for the hard drives. This significantly minimizes vibrations, though usually not 100%. The noise from the motor and the read/write heads remains, however. To make the hard drive truly nearly silent, there is therefore no way around using hard drive damping. In an ultra-silent PC with virtually inaudible fans and an inaudible power supply, the use of hard drive damping is highly recommended. Hard drive damping consists of a completely enclosed, solid box that is installed inside the hard drive bay of the silent PC. Such a box is usually made of thick aluminum. The interior is lined with damping material. It is mounted in a 5.25" bay using decoupled mounts.
Even simpler: go straight for large SSDs, whether in the 2.5" format or as an M.2 plug-in card. With no moving parts, these storage devices remain completely silent. |
![]() | Silent PC: Case
When choosing a case for a silent PC, we recommend a soundproof case with features such as decoupled hard drive cages and pre-installed silent fans. Since the cooling capabilities of a soundproof case are usually inferior to those of a standard gaming case, investing in high-quality models makes perfect sense.
As top picks in their price range, we recommend the Fractal Design Define R7 and the Silent Base or Dark Base series from be quiet!. |
![]() | Silent PC: Case Insulation
Case insulation is achieved using insulation mats that line the interior of the Silent PC’s case. These mats ensure the best possible noise reduction by absorbing airborne sound and reducing vibrations, as they make the case more rigid. In particular, high-frequency noises such as coil whine, which are otherwise difficult to eliminate, are thereby eliminated or prevented from escaping to the outside.
However, it is important to note that case insulation is only effective on a PC that is already very quiet and can serve as the final step toward a perfect ultra-silent PC. A PC that is already loud out of the box cannot be converted into a silent PC simply by using sound insulation. |
![]() | Silent PC: Quiet Graphics Card
The graphics card is a component that no PC should be without. For a silent PC, the graphics card should ideally feature a zero-fan mode, in which the fans stop completely when the load is low and the temperature is typically between 50–60°C. Graphics cards undergo extensive noise testing at MIFCOM, particularly quiet models can then be identified by a silent icon in the configurator.
