Hardware requirements for a game development workstation:
Are you looking for the perfect PC for game development? Whether you need a powerful computer for mobile game development or for the most demanding VR projects, we have the ideal configurations for you. We’ve analyzed benchmarks and studies from the most reputable hardware magazines and conducted our own tests, and based on these findings, we offer you the best workstations:
Which processor is best suited for game development?
One of the performance-determining components in a game development workstation is the processor. Here, it makes sense to choose a processor with high single-core performance and multiple cores. The best combination of these features is currently offered primarily by the latest AMD processors, including the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D (8 cores, up to 5.2GHz turbo clock) and the Ryzen 9 9950X (16 cores, up to 5.7GHz turbo clock).
If the workstation is used for tasks (e.g., compiling and light building) that benefit significantly from high multi-core performance, additional CPU cores are advisable. For this purpose, fourth-generation AMD Threadripper processors are recommended.
Which graphics card should you choose for game development?
Currently, Unreal Engine uses the graphics card solely to render graphics on the screen. A better graphics card can therefore achieve higher FPS in the viewport and in games. Other tasks are still handled by the system’s CPU. For getting started in game development, we recommend an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070; for the most demanding tasks and development in a VR environment, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 with 32GB VRAM is currently the best choice.

How much RAM do you need for game development?
How much RAM you need for your game development workstation depends on your specific projects and whether you have many RAM-intensive tasks such as light building. In general, we recommend 32GB of RAM; for particularly demanding tasks, we recommend 64GB.
Do I need an SSD for game development?
To enable fast load times, an SSD should be used for the operating system and applications. The fast system drive is supplemented by an additional SSD for storing projects. Since game development often involves loading large projects, it is recommended to use at least a SATA SSD for this purpose. If the projects are particularly large, an NVMe SSD further accelerates project load times. A traditional HDD is suitable for storing long-term projects. You should not work directly from it.
