Which processor is best suited for virtual reality?

One of the key performance components in a VR workstation is the processor. The requirements for a VR PC—whether for education, gaming, or entertainment—differ only slightly from those of traditional gaming computers. That’s why it makes sense to choose a processor with high single-core performance. An AMD Ryzen 7 9700X (8 cores, up to 5.4GHz turbo clock) or a Ryzen 9 9900X (12 cores, up to 5.6GHz turbo clock) is particularly well-suited for this.

 

If the VR workstation is to be used for creating VR content, more CPU cores are advisable, as these applications scale well with the additional cores. In addition to a large number of cores, a high clock speed is also necessary here. For this purpose, we recommend processors from the Intel Xeon W-2500 series or AMD Threadripper 7000 series.

 

Which graphics card should you choose for virtual reality?

In addition to the processor, the performance of the VR workstation depends on the graphics card installed. Here, you should also consider the resolution of the VR headset being used, as a higher headset resolution always correlates with greater demands on the graphics card. The Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, for example, have a resolution of 1080 x 1200. Since the headsets contain two displays—one for each eye—this results in a total resolution of 2160 x 1200. Additionally, the refresh rate is 90 Hz. Therefore, it is advantageous for the application’s FPS to match the display’s refresh rate to avoid issues such as screen tearing.

 

Due to the high requirements (2160 x 1200 at 90 FPS), most low-end and mid-range graphics cards struggle to run applications at the highest graphics settings. That’s why we recommend at least an NVIDIA RTX 5060 as an entry-level option for VR. If you want to enjoy your applications at the highest quality and in 4K, you should opt for an NVIDIA RTX 5080 or even an RTX 5090.

 

How much RAM do you need for virtual reality?

For a VR PC, we recommend at least 8GB of RAM. For a well-balanced overall configuration that allows you to run the latest programs and games, you should install 16GB of RAM. For VR developers, it makes sense to purchase up to 32GB of RAM.

 

Do I need an SSD for virtual reality?

To ensure fast load times, you should use an SSD for both the operating system and VR applications. Additionally, you can use either a large HDD or another SSD for data storage. An additional SSD boosts the PC’s performance, as projects can be loaded and saved more quickly.
